Conference in Bangalore, India. The focus was on knowledge exchange between East and West in Sustainable Design and Design for Social Innovation. Tara presented her preliminary PhD findings in a paper titled 'Mobilising the University as a frontier for design-led social innovation' Paper while Mariano presented on a range of sustainable design topics, including 'Traces of culture in students' concepts for product-service systems: experiences from three continents'; Paper1 'Sustainability consideration in the Australian International Design Awards' (co-authored with Stephen Clune); paper2 and 'Application of ecodesign strategies amongst Australian industrial design consultancies' paper3 :: AU

Anita Marosszeky, SRD Committee member :: recently presented the paper "Negotiating design responses in humanitarian crises" at the Design and Emotion Conference in Chicago. The event highlighted advances in technology that now present as emotional qualities and the subsequent design issues raised as the world experiences significant challenges and changes on many fronts. Combining research en route in New York, Anita notes contrasts between Chicago as an immaculate city given the night-labour intensive maintenance of the streets, architecture, public spaces and public art yet was reminded the current social reality with homeless people on many street corners. She also notes eco stores in the 'States' are really growing in size and popularity. Anita and other recent conference speakers will give brief reports at the SRD AGM.. :: AU

REAP Eco Paper Guide 2.0+ :: World Paper usage continues to rise increasing pressure on valuable resources. Also, many products are available that appear to have good green credentials. To increase transparency & help track through the maze of marketing claims, the REAP guide continues to lead. Reduce our carbon & environmental footprint by better understanding the processes & all environmental costs of our consumption. In all areas, learn to discern, understand how to make informed decisions and demand better paper, products, services, industry & government. Referenced by many organisations, it's also an indication to the complexity & the simplicity of the solution. /reap.htm :: AU

The Story of Electronics :: Shows the 'design for the dump' mentality common in the electronics industry. Annually, billions are spent on consumer electronics to buy gizmos we don't really need. Making these devices takes a huge environmental & public health toll: from mining the metals, water & energy use to toxic chemical content; and ultimate disposal creates mountains of e-waste. The solution is pretty simple: Make 'em Safe, Make 'em Last, & Take 'em Back. The message to industry: it's time to lose 'design for the dump mentality' & start making less toxic, longer lasting & more easily recyclable products. storyofstuff.org/electronics : blog :: USA

+ Al Gore's latest book OurChoice ; a plan to solve the climate crisis
Beyond "An Inconvenient Truth" and 30 global "solution summits" is a very readable summary of the issues, their relative importance plus many paths to design solutions. Cyberdyne robot suits. Lifts weights + provides disabled with increased mobility ::
"Robot Suit HAL" is a cyborg-type robot able to expand + improve physical capability. When a person attempts to move, nerve signals are sent from the brain to the muscles via motoneuron, moving the musculoskeletal system. At this moment, very weak biosignals can be detected on the surface of the skin. "HAL" catches these signals through a sensor attached on the wearer's skin. These signals power the unit to move the joint to match the wearer's muscle movement, enabling extra support for many activities :: Cyberdyne :: Online Story :: Lots of Pics at Time :: Japan

Nov 10-11 :: Powering Australia :: Unprecedented capital expenditure in energy is planned to meet demand, replace, inefficient assets and deliver with efforts to reduce the growth of CO2-e emissions. Major developments will be political - imposing power demand / supply change by mandating levels of CO2 emissions allowed + carbon pricing, new technology + by renewable energy targets.
