Continuing greener progress. The world is realising that now is the time to design and implement significant change but many are unsure as to how. SRD can help ...

SRD AGM 2010 Introduction:
.
Worldwide, the process of change is well under way but many of us see this process as lethargic, poorly directed and with limited goals. The SRD strives to accelerate the positive change process by exploring, developing and reporting on the myriad of activities that will deliver a sustainable future with concerted efforts and all with the essential core component of Responsible Design.
We are pleased to see SRD growing to be more effective and deliver better change outcomes. We have made great progress this year by stimulating discussion, examination & greater awareness of the issues online and at several exhibitions and believe we hold a unique position to promote design-led change that is currently not understood and under-appreciated. It is both worthwhile and essential to improve our efforts to be heard and better understood so we may all Reap the benefits.
More and more companies and people claim green cred. The SRD has this green credibility in in several forms and over many years but have yet to deliver and promote this effectively to a wider audience... with more support and input this too can change for the better.

SRD AGM 2010 Convenors Report:
.
The SRD now celebrates 21 years of advancing sustainability through Responsible Design. 21 years of leadership by professionals and academics, teaming to create new understandings, methods and practice of greener ideas, research, exhibitions, eco-materials selection and positive action all with a minimum budget and maximum volunteer input. Some similar organisations exist but none we've seen yet focus on promoting Design-led Change via connecting all design related disciplines as there is so much to gain. Our SRD Change exhibition series is just one component of this. We have an online presence, informative eNews and plans to take it all to the next level. SRD is still unique and even more relevant to today, now is the time to promote this.
.
On the global stage the UNFCCC just completed at Cancun Mexico with major steps toward a global agreement to coordinate a response to Climate Change. As a part of acting locally and globally, the SRD is contributing by promoting where responsible design that can have the most positive influence on this whole process. The new REDD agreement (which Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) is based on preserving forests especially in the tropics. Our own annually updated REAP Eco Paper guide has been online for seven years promoting better forest resource management, processes and greater understanding product transparency. Now there is much more global focus on this subject, it's a testament to our insight on long term work in this area.
.
SRD was also proud to write and present a paper "SRD Change: Showcasing graduate projects that provoke sustainable changes in design thinking and practice" for ConnectED 2010 (2nd International Design Education Conference at UNSW). The paper was co-authored by nearly all of our executive committee and details the process and value of this annual exhibition series for advancing design as a wellspring of responsible design ideas. The presentation was supported by a Retrospective exhibition at UNSW covering the first six years from 2004-2009. It is now quite a body of work worthy of closer inspection and further development.
.
SRD Change series SRD Change 10 achieved another bonus this year being accepted as part of Sydney Design, presented by the Powerhouse Museum. SRD remain the independent manager / curators while appreciating the extra visitors from inclusion in the Sydney Design catalogue and website. We were pleased with this achievement and also the repeat option for 2011. This year saw growth with the largest number of exhibits. Our venue hosts pyd. offered a design centre in Waterloo, a multi level space perfect for a chilly winter through the Sydney Design weeks in August. This support and offer for Exhibition space by pyd. was fantastic and we worked well to ensure it was mutually beneficial. Sponsorship was up slightly with businesses and Universities with the overall show value with prizes and contra input in excess of A$30,000. Talks are in progress for a return to revisit earlier venues and to involve more entrepreneurial participation to get more of these great ideas to market. The SRD Change 10 Cocktail Launch attracted approximately 300 people, who enjoyed the exhibition, the organic food and speeches. Costa from SBS Costa's Garden Odyssey opened the exhibition, giving an inspiring speech with encouragement to the graduates to go forth and grow their passion like the sunflower seeds he gave to each of them. Good Media coverage continues to be a challenge but shows that concerted efforts will produce results. This year saw online coverage from TreeHugger, Green magazine, Bindarri and the City of Sydney What's On. Our new SRD Change 10 website designed by the graduates at www. is a good platform for archiving the exhibitor designs from this year and previous years in much greater detail. SRD Change 10 PrizeGiving included the invitation to all previous graduates as Alumni and several attended enjoying the networking, live music and excited SRDChange10 prize winners. The major winner, Basia Nowacki virtually bounced around the room for 5 minutes... and she was still sitting down! Our winners who were awarded over $10,000 worth of prizes are online and one more here tonight... Xiaoyi or Rita as many know her wins a 2 year subscription to Indesign magazine for her efforts towards assisting with a great event.
.
The SRD sustainability message is reaching an increasing number of people each year. A message made even stronger by the quality of design, depth of research and forward thinking innovation the projects present. So congratulations is extended to all the SRD Change 10 participants, for their interest, commitment to more sustainable methods and for their contribution of time, effort and support with the Exhibition generally. They have all won through their participation in an event which is making inroads towards making a real difference towards our sustainable future. .
.
There are many opportunities for SRD to further evolve and make a substantial difference to progressing the sustainability debate and our future. * Green Design Advocacy, promotion, marketing, lobbying, connecting with green entrepreneurs, local, state and federal government. More professional, better web presence, accounting, membership, admin., Opening for National entries for SRD Change 11. * Further develop a pitch to corporations for a significant prize designed for SRD Change to include a significant cash amount for a selected winning entry decided with business and public debate. * Assistance to review CRM Software solutions to get more professional web presence, connection with Smedia and be more responsive to membership needs. * Grant opportunities or developing other relationships with foundations, etc. would be very welcome. * The development of a virtual design agency drawing on the combined skills of the SRD and Change Alumni. * Working with other lobby groups with similar goals on mentoring and promoting entrepreneurial involvement, we are planning 2011 meetings for this. SRD is at the cross roads and NOW is the time to map our future and more effectively propagate the responsible and sustainable design message in alignment with current trends. Your input is encouraged to make this happen to the degree it deserves.

To further the SRD's role of promoting responsible design we attend numerous functions and seminars to ensure good contact with our current and future members and supporters. We also have regular governance meetings ensuring good momentum through the year. The SRD to continue to show design and sustainability are truly symbiotic solution creating processes for our future.
